onny Burd was barely a teenager when he began plucking
a guitar on the family farm in Fairmount, New Jersey;
teaching himself to play by listening to Gene Autry records and
doggedly imitating the chords. But Donny was born with an ear
for music, a trait common in the Burd family, and it was clear that
he had a gift when he played in public for the first time and
brought the crowd to its feet at a local graduation.
