ohn Deere green and yellow are the
first colors of spring at Melick9s Orchard on King Street, in Oldwick, New
Jersey. But the stable of tractors across from
the hydraulic hum of the cider press hadn9t
shaken off their late winter slumber yet, as
George Melick and his son, John, rolled up
alongside them in a white pickup. George is
the formidable, 88 year-old patriarch of the
Melick family, who have been farming in Oldwick and Hunterdon County since 1725, and
he remembers a day when his father still had
a team of horses on the farm, but by that time
