he British had exploited an undefended pass that led behind the American lines
and were threatening to encircle and annihilate the outflanked Continentals. By
11:00, Brigadier General William Alexander, a zealous patriot known by his incongruous
English title, Lord Stirling, found himself facing British assaults on three sides. With nothing left for him to do but buy time for his desperate men, Stirling ordered most of his
brigade to flee across the only escape route left while he covered their retreat with a contingent of 270 Marylanders. Undaunted by the odds, Stirling and his pugnacious rearguard repeatedly charged the oncoming British and held them off long enough for the
beleaguered Americans to reach the safety of Brooklyn Heights. Surrounded and with
only 50 bloodied and exhausted Marylanders left, Stirling was finally forced to surrender.
